This website shows the locations of the shipwrecks located on the Copper Harbor Peninsula. The John Jacob Astor boat was a boat that Father Baraga periodically used. This boat sunk on September 21, 1844 just after Father Baraga moved to L'Anse just south of Copper Harbor. Father Baraga frequently went to Copper Harbor, so the loss of this boat would have been well known by him.
