Rev. Frederic Baraga, Arbre Croche, to Leopoldine Foundation, Vienna.

Describes a winter journey of hardships to Mackinac on snowshoes. He then tells about his first mission journey of the year, to Little Detroit, across Lake Michigan, and establishes there a new mission. He then visited the mission near present Manistique. From there he went to Beaver Island where he met with some opposition from pagan Indians. On returning to his home mission, Arbre Croche, he found a large number of Indians ready for baptism. He ends with giving thanks for support received from the members of the Leopoldine Foundation. GXE. DALY.

Visited Grand River and found excellent prospects there for a new mission. Describes region and its inhabitants. Baptized Indians at Grand River, Muskegon and Pere Marquette River, for a total of 86. Gives reasons why a mission should be established there and asks for support. Reports receipt of gifts which are opportune for the new mission. GXE. DALY.

Acknowledges receipt of box of gifts, which included 6 paintings by Langus. Regrets that he has little time for correspondence. Charged with establishing mission on Grand River. Has learned that their sister Antoinette intends to come to the missions in America. Believes she should not come as her services are not necessary. Gives directions for servant, whom he expects from Europe, as to how to reach Grand River. Regrets that he cannot find time to send museum objects to Count Hochenwart. GXE. DALY.
